In business for over 135 years! Our company is one of the oldest cutting tool manufacturers in North America. Over the years, the entrepreneurial spirit, boldness, vision and know-how of the Garant and Mercier families in Quebec have enabled Mercier Saws to become a reference in the industry.
The history of our company
In 1891, Napoléon Mercier, a passionate of woodworking and the tools associated to it, founded Les Scies Mercier (Mercier Saws) of Levis. The production is diversified: round saws, shingle saws, mill saws, band saws, precision saws, rip saws, planer knives, finishing knives, moulding knives, saw blades, handsaws, files, emery wheels and saw teeth. Therefore, our company has been a leading manufacturer of saws and knives of all kinds for a long time.
In 1911, the company was booming and the building where the workshop was located was expanded. In fact, it was exactly in this year that the company name "Scies Mercier" was adopted. The building was then divided into five sections: one was dedicated to the hammering of the saws, and the others covered production, storage, the soaking room, the offices and the cutting tools manufacturing. The workshop is a real production plant!
The growth of the company has required larger facilities over the years, but the walls of our original workshop still stand, constituting today one of the most important industrial heritages in Levis.
In 1986, the company was acquired by the Garant family. Since this acquisition, Scies Mercier has worked closely with its two sister companies, Garant Machinerie and Elite Tools.
Three complementary companies, managed by entrepreneurs in their blood, offering a wide range of products and owning a very versatile production workshop. No wonder that even after 130 years of existence, the company still has the wind in its sails.
The making of saws
Our know-how in this field has been passed down from generation to generation since 1891. This type of manufacturing requires both precise mechanical processes and artisanal techniques, and we master both worlds. You will therefore acquire a cutting tool of excellent quality and efficient. Technology certainly allows us to automate part of the work, but hammering and straightening the blades requires a high level of human expertise.
Quality saws
Our saw blades and knives have been recognized in Quebec for several decades. It is said that most of the wood mouldings that embellish the buildings of Quebec City and Levis were carved by cutting tools from Mercier Saws.
Our excellent reputation with our customers and the industry has allowed us to break into new markets in Canada and the United States.
